We only sell the Burchell Zebra as this is the common Zebra found in Southern Africa and in our area of South Africa, KwaZulu Natal in South Africa and is not on the endangered of CITES list. All the other Zebra species are CITES protected and do not sell them. Burchell Zebra are in fact very prolific in South Africa, and we have an abundance of them in our local game reserves. We are registered with KZN Wildlife, who are the local conservation authorities in our area and obtain all permits and documents from them to legally export Zebra hides worldwide.
When sending a Zebra hide all hides will always enter through a Fish and Wildlife port in your country where customs will check that all documents are correct, and that the Zebra hide is legally obtained and allowed to be exported and imported into your country. You can feel confident that you are buying a legally sourced Zebra hide that has been ethically sustained in South Africa and regulated by South African conservation authorities to allow the hide to be exported worldwide. Should you want to see our KZN Wildlife trading permit allowing us to sell hide please email us and we will email you a copy of that trading permit.
We obtain our Zebra hides through various means. We buy directly from South African conservation authorities in South Africa from government-controlled game farms. We buy from guy sin the culling industry that have been authorized to do rotation culling on certain farms due to over populations every year and we also get from private game farms where a hunter will sell off his wet hide to us and we then tan it at one of South Africa leading tanneries.
A GRADE AFRICAN BURCHELL ZEBRA SKINS FOR SALE
A bit about Burchell Zebra (Plains Zebra’s)
Scientific Name: Equus burchellii
The Burchell’s Zebra are not endangered, and it is legal to sell or own a zebra skin.
The Burchell’s Zebra lives in small family units, which typically consist of one stallion and one mare with their foals. Non-breeding stallions occur in bachelor groups. Herd stallions are between four to 12 years old. The body stripes of the Burchell Zebra extend around the belly and stripes on the legs are less prominent, they measure 1.3 to 1.4 meters at the shoulder and weighs 300-320 Kg.
Burchell Zebra are predominantly a grazer, feeding in areas with short grass. They have a strong sensitive upper lip with which it gathers herbage by collecting the grass between the lip and the lower incisors before plucking the harvest. This species is the largest of the two distinct species inhabiting South Africa’s wildlife domain The ranges of the Burchell’s Zebra inhabit savannas, from treeless grasslands to open woodlands; they sometimes occur in tens of thousands in migratory herds on the Serengeti plains. Zebras are important prey for lions and hyenas, and to a lesser extent for hunting dogs, leopards and cheetahs. When a family group is attacked, the members form a semicircle, face the predator and watch it, ready to bite or strike should the attack continue. If one of the family is injured the rest will often encircle it to protect it from further attack.
Burchell’s zebra was thought to become extinct in 1918, when the last Burchell’s zebra died at the Berlin Zoo. But after many reports came from Africa about sightings of Burchell’s it showed that Burchell’s were not only still alive in the wild but thriving in the areas of Etosha and Kwazulu-Natal.
Zebra’s run in herds on the plains of Africa where many predators often survive only by tracking and consuming these wild zebras, many of these zebras only survive by out running or barely escaping these predators: as a result many of these zebras end up with scars or scaring from close calls with lions, cheetahs and many others not to mention thorns , cacti and a host of other things that stick , cut and create blemishes on their Hides , This is how and why we grade our Zebra Skin Rugs the way we do.
